4,000meters. Yes, I trust it. I especially trust our extensive testing and real time acoustic and strain monitoring system. We can detect any anomaly well before we reach a critical pressure. We know of no other sub that is so well instrumented.
I saw one article where they said the machine has to stop its descent to do the acoustic structural measurements shit, and that they planned to pause and get readings every hour
Which sounds fucking crazy, that is nowhere near often enough I’d think. A fucking lot can change in an hour, and when the thing reaches its limit you know it’s not gonna be a “oh, we better deal with this soon”, but instead an essentially instantaneous rupture
I do know that actual non-failure engineering projects can use sounding hammers and acoustic shit like that to assess the structural soundness of tanks for fluids etc., in general it is a valid technique. But it looks like in this instance it was a pretty big flop
