Been enjoying FFXVI a lot so far. The plot feels like a mixture of Ff tactics (class warfare, noble born son who identifies with lower classes, not quite a bastard), FF14 (many from the same team, combat is very tight and involves reading clear cues to react to), and FF6 (imperialists abusing magic, etc).
The combat is far better than 15 as it's been tightened way more, feels like simplified devil may cry. The game gives you an option to use accessories that simplify combat so that it's incredibly accessible, but if you feel that using these accessories later is too easy you are benefitted by freeing those accessory slots for ones that give stat boosts.
Anyways it feels good to be able to enjoy an FF again. After 12 I kinda gave up on them (tried 15 and dropped it)
I love FFT and it's story so I'd probably be down with this entry's plot but sadly I don't have a console or pc that can play this, 🤷
That sucks. I splurged on a PS5 during covid in a time when I had a good amount of disposable income (and honestly it collected dust for a long time).
I don't buy new games anymore either. I pirate what I can on PC (which is old enough that it's barely playing anything new anymore) and otherwise I wait however long it takes for games to get down to 30$ or less because I don't feel fomo often.
I actually realized I could use a free month trial of game fly for FFXVI and somehow managed to get them to send on release so my plan is to play as much as possible before the trial is up and then get back to it once it's on sale.
I wish that consoles went down in price over time but it feels like they're following Nintendo in leaving hardware prices up 😐
Cool but I really can't see myself ever buying a new console ever again. I've thought about the switch tho, if I ever get a job lined up. The new zelda(s) look like they're worth a buy and monster hunter world/rise.
I don't have one but I helped an old roommate hack his. They are very very easy to mod if you get the right model version, and absolutely worth it even if you have to pay the premium for it, and once you do it becomes a very economical purchase since you've got access to the whole library
Dodging spoilers but I'm looking forward to the PC port, I loved FF15 even though a lot of people said it was mid at the time, see also FF7R and FFSoP.
FF15 outran its own plot. Like, the first 1/3rd of the game was solid (not FF6/7/9 good, but good enough). Then you get on a boat and suddenly the entire story framework just drops away like the writers ran out of paper and had to start scribbling in the margins to get the job done.
By the end of the game, they were just kinda flinging story beats at you out of a train window.
The game tried to pack way too much new technology under the hood. You ended up with these really clunky battle scenes and half-finished dungeons by the end. Not to mention all the hanging plot threads.
I enjoyed 15 early on. But as soon as you cross the sea to Altissia, the story just kinda gave up on itself and died. Shame, too, because there were story beats later on that suggested someone had written a good plot and they'd simply never developed it into the requisite number of story beats.
Still waiting to hear whether FF16 gives you one full game or half a game plus a fist full of confused interlocking DLCs.
I think I'm about halfway through? or maybe a third through the story? I'm not bothering much with sidequests just sticking to the main story. My only gripe is the female characters seem weak so far. Maybe that changes by the end but we'll see.
Oh, and the performance. Runs like shit. Really wish performance mode worked better. Maybe it'll get patched, I dunno.
Yeah i felt let down by the series after 12 as well, with the exception of FF7 remake. Looking forward to this one. Everything your saying is what i was hoping for after hearing the direction this one was taking with story and combat
Its not as direct on the class conflict as fft was, and it's not going to scratch the itch of the world exploring that the overworld gave from the earlier titles, but it is significantly better than the last few final fantasy have been in terms of story and gameplay
Ff12 was the last one I was very excited for. I did a midnight release and sat in a line to get it. I felt that the combat wasnt awful but the plot was so bad that I told myself after that I would never buy a final fantasy at release again. I skipped 13. 15 I bought when it was 20$ and never finished because I just couldn't enjoy it.
I'm not very far in but so far I feel like 16 is a big improvement to the series. I'm not sure everyone will like it but I am very critical of the series at this point and it think this one has done a lot to redeem final fantasy for me
I'm not gonna read this thread because I'm just a wee lil sprout barely halfway through HW but if anyone is in an active left queer FC on Siren hit me up. Or if anyone is on Siren at all hit me up.
I'm not playing FF14 (I gave it a go but my mmo love is stuck in an earlier age, I think), but it did seem to me that a lot of the community of FFXI bled over and I'm glad for it
