Magic the gathering usually requires you to pay money to get pieces of cards to play with IRL, but we don't have that restriction playing digitally.
I usually play on Tabletop Simulator, but there's also the free and less computer demanding Cockatrice.
For newcomers to the game: Magic the gathering is a fairly complicated game, but you can learn it incrementally, learning new mechanics as you get more involved in it. I'd be happy to teach beginners. When you begin really understanding it, it only gets more and more fun. It's also a social game, meaning there's modes of play where you don't have to try hard, and you can play for fun without playing to win.

Are there any decent free MTG drafting programs? Drafting a good block is probably my favorite paper format since you don't need to build a collection, but also they can be balanced real nicely.
mtg forge for play against bots, xmage for play against other people. forge has like every possible set, hundreds of cubes, chaos draft and a whole bunch of singleplayer modes available.
I've played casually on & off since the 90's, but social anxiety has always kept me from getting into it outside of my friend groups at the time, and I've never had a steady enough income to where I've been able to keep whatever my current collection is when things get bad.
That said, I'm potentially interested in re-learning with a few chill folks on a semi-regular basis. I don't think I've ever played more than the standard 1v1 format, but I can usually pick things up fairly quickly. PST/PDT timezone

im ust+2 (which puts me out of sync with a lot of folks on here) but I'd sure be up for some commander (usually only play on mtg arena, which feels like sort of a different thing)

I used to play on Cockatrice, and was really into competitive legacy till I stopped playing in Khans block.
Might be down for some EDH, but Cockatrice is pretty garbage for multiplayer so I should check out those other apps.

pretty sure for rule enforced play people usually use xmage, forge is more for singleplayer/ bot play

Spelltable is is my usually haunt, and it's pretty cool for anyone that wants to do some paper. You can use OBS with something like Moxfield or similar to play webcam without having any paper. Maybe not so good for opsec I guess, but certainly fun.

If you want to learn, magic arena has a pretty good tutorial and provides you with a bunch of starter decks that you can play against other beginners.
