she firmly rejected the ongoing attacks on workers and immigrants in Finland and across Europe. But her victorious campaign also called for sanctions against Israel over its war on Gaza, restrictions on nuclear weapons, and for calm in Finnish relations with China.

    Not bad

yeah, aside from "we were smoll bean innocent country around ww2", its nice, and saying otherwise is likely electoral suicide.

Ok, maybe the nordics can be redeemed alongside Ireland, but they’re on thin ice.

Despite making calls that have enraged the right-wing press — such as allowing Left Alliance MPs a free vote in Parliament on whether Finland should join NATO.

In said vote half their MPs voted in favour of Finland joining Nato, with the conditions that its membership "remain defensive, with no permanent NATO military bases or nuclear weapons within the country"

Many progressives that are having uneasy feelings about the intense austerity rallied to do democracy and voted for her in a election nobody cares about about positions that hold very little power. Now patting themselves in the back about "defeating the far right" while austerity just intensifies daily, because they have done their part.

Aldo pretty bold statements about our Nato Left. Also interesting this is stated as the socialist left, these guys are socdem at best.

In general, northern Europe bucked this grim trend — and the news from Finland was particularly bright. While the far-right Finns Party has been part of the government for the last year, in Sunday’s vote the big winner was on the other end of the political spectrum. The socialist Left Alliance won 17.3 percent of the vote and elected three MEPs, putting it in second place behind the center-right National Coalition. The Finns Party lost a seat as its vote tumbled from 13.8 to 7.6 percent.

Suprised that Finland, out of all EU countries, would elect Democratic Socialists and Socdems.

they always were socdem-adjacent, like all nordics, and like all nordics their socdems have been drifting rightwards (prolly since 70s). Now old socdem politics is radical new left shrug-outta-hecks

Yeah, but it's a bit surprising since they didn't ran on a "LETS KILL ALL IMMIGRANTS" plataform. I think they even want to sanction Israel.

They allegedly have eradicated homelessness recently. Probably a big part of why they won, didn't sit around twiddling fingers.

lol, wtf is this site? It doesn't exactly seem reliable, and the idea that Finland has "ended" homelessness is complete horseshit. Sure, there's public housing, but there's also a massive queue of people waiting to get those public, relatively cheap apartments. The rest can just try their luck on the free market (read: pay rent or die, just like every other Western nation).

It's also extremely ironic to bring this up considering our current government is more likely to incinerate the homeless than eradicate homelessness.

What video? Do you seriously think there's no homelessness in Finland?

I hate to sound like some pedantic nerd, but ”eradicate” is a very strong word, and I've seen people seriously claim in the pastthat Finland has given all homeless people places to live.

They do love to flaunt this, but they have no actual political power so it's more like a wish or what they say their goals are, not that it has an impact.

I work with homeless people in my everyday and they are definitely not doing so well so this common Finnish country brand PR they love to say everywhere is an eternal annoyance to me when I see it on social media. It gets thrown around by libs a lot in places like Mastodon.

The Left Alliance aren't socialists, they're liberal NATO bootlickers.
