I used to watch these on telly as a kid. I think they used similar methods as Disney to animate in that they filmed actors movements and drew transparencies over the top.
Fleischer were the first to use it and it revolutionized animation
Just looked it up (took me a few minutes). Yes you're right! Animated a clown with rotoscoping. IN 1915!!! 😲
