So, if universal has to replace the trees with substantially similar ones (same age), and given that this is construction in LA, that's going to be a couple million per tree?

I found one article stating that they are fig trees which are nearly impossible to kill. They might get fined for trimming city trees, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for any serious punishment against the studio.

Those don't look like fig trees to me, ficus family trees tend to be a lot wider. Interestingly, you can actually check into this here: https://losangelesca.treekeepersoftware.com/index.cfm

I'm not sure what kind they are, but in this article Universal claims they are some kind of ficus:

          https://ktla.com/news/city-investigating-after-trees-cut-near-universal-property-on-strike-day/

They also say they prune them yearly, but a quick look at street view history in google maps would suggest they were only pruned anywhere near this heavily in 2021. Prior to that they were always kept much fuller-looking. The timing is obviously malicious.

Something something if the penalty is only a fine then it's just a fee for rich people.

this can go into urbanism too, just an awful stroad with a measly sidewalk. The tree trimming wouldnt be an issue if the block was built with providing actual shade in mind
