Ultra (1997) by Depeche Mode is my favorite album of all time. It's, after the first track, downtempo synthpop with some triphop influences. The circumstances of the creation of the album (the band members being in a really bad shape at the time from: drug abuse, heavy drinking and depression - but being made at a time where they were recovering from the worst of it) make it pretty uplifting to me, especially with the version also including the 1998 single "It's Only When I Lose Myself"
Disintegration (1989) by the Cure is atmospheric goth rock with songs that cross over to a hazy, dream-like pop. It's also considered by some to be among the best albums of all time.
Dreamland (1996) by Robert Miles is probably the best trance album of all time
The Turn of a Friendly Card (1980) by the Alan Parsons Project is a very good prog rock album, and one of my other favorites.
I've been posting stuff from (or the entirety of) these albums on c/music for months haha.
