victory gundam is tomino trying to beat the viewers over the head with this meme and still people only took away wow cool robot
Victory Gundam really harshed my giant robot vibes with all the realities of war.
my vibes were harshed by the weird freudian stuff, but i still liked it
Big ol smoldering piles of corpses tend to do that to kid's shows
anno was copying tomino's notes so hard, and he didn't even have anything as good as that one soldier blowing himself up because he can't live with the knowledge that there are 12 year olds on the frontlines of the war
NGE is Anno looking at Victory Gundam like "Wow! Cool
robotmisogyny!"
I blame Gundam Wing and its nonsense end of history lib politics for the "Gundam = War is bad" reading that the western fandom has. That, and a lack of understanding of what imperialism is, but it's easier to blame Toonami, isn't it?
idk, i think wing seems far from the worst offender. at least it seems relatively pro anti-imperialist violence. i've only seen like 2 episodes though
Wing starts good, but turns into a muddled mess halfway. Some cool aesthetics and ideas (what if we made a bunch of pretty robot pilot boys and put them in a school like a shojo anime), though.
It's worth watching for Endless Waltz, or at least that's what I tell myself.
the show ran into serious production issues and the director changed midway through. Modern anime production under capitalism
Endless Waltz is sick.
well i'll try and go in with an open mind anyway
i love ur judau avatar btw
All I got out of Gundam Wing was that accelerationism is dumb.
I think that was mostly in Endless Waltz though. I dunno, it was half a lifetime ago.
00 Gundam: To end war we need to blow up all the people making war!
Me:
It's what I love about Real Robot Mecha: it's such a potent visual metaphor. A giant piloted robot just sums it up in such a viscerally immediate way.
They do kill a woman with a spent, giant shell casing in like the opening scenes of F91. Point is pretty clear
I admit I was disappointed with Witch from Mercury for its lightweight worldbuilding.
The Universal Century setting is rightfully regarded very highly, and the fact that the lion's share of it was written by Tomino while his infamously messy worldview was still mostly coherent and containing many good criticisms of contemporary capitalism. Unfortunately, his tendency to be a crank was still present even in his glory days, such as the plan to have Zeta Gundam have openly antisemitic plot elements. Thankfully, that didn't make it into the final work. No idea how much his consistently poor mental health is to blame.
G Gundam is fun, and After War X Gundam is a worthy totally not UC spinoff.
i'm working on victory rn. lots of incredible stuff, but there are also the horrors*
*shrike team, bath scene, general misogyny
Legend goes, Tomino was intentionally trying to sabotage the franchise back then.
