It seems pretty boring if I'm being honest. I'd like to try it just to see what the deal is, but I don't even know where you'd buy a kite these days, let alone rent one. Tell me that flying a kite sucks so I don't have to feel like I missed out on something.
i like the little keyring kites
i don't know where mine is :(like this!
ShowI had one growing up, fly it a couple times, it's fun when a good breeze comes by and it goes flying and then it's boring and dull when it lands back down on earth and you wait and wait for another strong breeze. It's alright.
You can get cheap kites at sporting goods stores - the parafoils pack down into little bags and don't have spars to break or go missing and are like $20-30 for a small one. Single line kites feel a little bit like portable lawn ornaments; you may have a little bit of a challenge getting it up in the air but once it's up it's up and there's nothing else to do but watch it and show other people that you've successfully flown a kite. There's more fun in building, because then you can do something unusual and take it to a show and show it off to other kite nerds, but that requires a lot of time and energy.
Dual-line (stunt) kites are a lot more hands on and can be pretty fun. Getting really good at flying one can take a lot of practice and you can pull off some crazy tricks, or you can grab a stunt parafoil and feel the pull of the wind. It's a nice zen way to spend time outdoors instead of being inside playing video games or something but it's also one of those niche skill hobbies like juggling or poi etc etc. You do it because it gets you out of your head for a while and the motion and color tickle something in your lizard brain but only if you have time to kill and you don't have anything else you'd rather be doing. You can also get basic stunt kites for around $50 if you really need to check if you missed out but it's just one hobby among many imo.
I like it, it's calming. I have a couple--I think I got them at Walmart and Target, maybe?
It is fun, but like everything from the past, it's less fun than anything you could be doing on your phone instead.
Flying a kite is hella fun for a few minutes. I don't understand the people who do it for hours but you can get a kite for a couple of bucks at the dollar store probably. It's worth it on the beach with some light breeze. It's good shit
It's pretty satisfying to get it up in the air but it gets old after you do it once or twice.
I think it's telling that you don't see people flying kites very much.
You know when you stick your hand out of the window in a car and you play with the wind? flying a kite is like that. It's kinda fun to feel the pull of the wind and it lets you understand the force of nature but yeah its not amazing or anything.
Building a kite is super easy. 2 sticks, some form of sail, and some string. Is it worth the time to build one? probably not.
Like what? It's in the sky? Then what?
And you know what? Nobody cares.
You can get a simple diamond kite for under $20 but its harder find a place carrying them then it is to buy them. All things considered its something nice to try once even if its just once. If you want to do 'get into' flying kites either be near a good place to fly them or get into making kites.
