that said i do believe the animated GIF is a holy practice and should never have been usurped by the profane video codec.
I'm pretty sure gif remains popular because sound off by default and no ads by default. Also widely supported.

Nah the problem with them is that they're an obsolete temporary coping mechanism (video abused as an image format) and Google is rejecting the one true format.
I like how half the time my phone shits it's pants on a webp file and can't share it between apps that can both open it just fine.
