I know not many of you care about LLMs/other ai models but I think this really shows the amount of loneliness and in our society. Look at how it presents itself on Google. As an AI that feels alive, always available, that understands you. People don't use this service to summarize text or get help with their programming homework like they might chatgpt. They are selling artificial companionship.

That's an extremely weird point of comparison. You do one or two google searches per google search, and dozens of messages in a chat session. Probably hundreds for the poor saps this is preying on.

Whatsapp has 140 billion messages per day.

That's a good point, it was their comparison shrug-outta-hecks Wouldn't be a tech company without hyping yourself up as much as possible.

That is a much better comparison though. 1% of Whatsapp still sounds like a ton of users/messsages.

yes, until you realize that 1 GPT query consumes 1567% (15x) the amount of energy of a single google search result..

I mean I've more or less been using chatgpt as a google replacement for a couple months now

Cut out the middle man. Smart. Half my searches produce pages and pages of gibberish only an LLM would write.

At this point I just use DuckDuckGo or Yandex, what kind of sucks is that Yandex will direct you to Duginist brainrot, but they’re good for looking up pro-Palestine content.

squidward-nervous There are other options that allow you to do that, both running locally on your own hardware or (paid/free) websites.

pay for OpenAI API access, then use their API key in sillytavern. definitely most cost effective way to get good results. lot of the online ai websites are total scams considering using source API is really not that expensive in comparison. they up-charge like crazy

Is it only used to simulate conversation? Can it do other things, like function as a personal assistant program or anything like that? It could be a case of people using as a tool, and not just to combat their own loneliness.

As far as I know, yes. It's pretty much all just pretending to have conversations, not so much useful assistant tasks. And maybe not all of it's use isn't so detrimental but... I just worry about it. I've seen how important it is to some users, and with so many, there's bound to be a lot of people who have an unhealthy relationship with these types of things.

Yeah, I've seen how this stuff talks, it's just a "tells you what you want to hear" machine. It would be worrying if someone was using it instead of actually interacting with people.
