There's no universal pin to homepage functionality yet so it is the best that can be achieved. They're working on it I believe but there's a lot of competing priorities for the lemmy devs most of all being federation so they can get funds released for hitting a milestone.
Basically think of "Main" like a subreddit itself where these pins go. A homepage pin would actually be more like a reddit announcement, something that's needed but non-existent currently.

They usually aren't pinned so I go to the search bar and type in 'mega thread', then sort by new.
They are pinned in the "Main" comm.
