Their response to this has been hilarious. I don't think they realise how fucking crooked they sound (or don't care?) when they pretend Trump getting a hole in his ear is a bad thing.

Like, my brother's in Christ, you have been saying this man is a threat to our Democracy. You repeatedly have failed to stop him. He is one of the most openly hated people on Earth and yet here you are telling people that you're horrified that his ear got a booboo. You sit there pretending to be anti-violence when YOUR OWN COUNTRY HAS BEEN PROTESTING YOUR FUNDING OF VIOLENCE IN GAZA.

It's like the Dems are doing everything in their power to remind voters "Don't bother voting for us, we won't protect you and we will lie about literally everything."

If Trump wins it will be 100% the Dems fault.

I think they'd be saying all the same shit, but I think the crackdown would be coming a lot sooner as they scrambled to prove themselves "loyal to American values" or something.

Trump is enough of a dickhead that he is almost certainly going to squander a lot of the goodwill he's going to get from this, very quickly. He will probably be a little too broad in his response and come after targets so obviously wrong that some of the Democrats will push back, at least a little.

I do fully expect him to win, though, and be so incredibly much worse than he was the first time because he's going to be vindictive and legally invincible, and my immediate family is a little worried. All my son's friends are reconsidering going to university in-state, and we're looking at moving as a family to wherever he wants to go to school.

They would condemn the shooter and give republicans all the resources they need to arrest anyone they want. Then they’d tone down their rhetoric against the republicans

I’ve always imagined that if someone went on a massacre on Klan members during their ceremonies, liberals would pray for them.

The attempt succeeding would have been a good outcome.

The attempt failing is much much worse than it not occurring at all.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I feel like if he got got, whoever gets the Republican nomination would win by default (especially against Sleepy Joe) and govern functionally identically to Trump. The shooter's motives only seen to make sense to me as either a suicidal nihilist that wanted to go out with some fame/infamy, some further-right ideologue crank that felt betrayed by Trump, or a sheepdipped unwitting patsy that was unbeknownst to him part of some flashy political theater involving factions of the Secret Service/FBI/CIA that wanted to hand Trump a layup reelection or guarantee some other Republican gets in. The security state wins either way there despite it making them look bad, they're definitely getting new gear and a bigger budget either way.

        It doesn't work that way.

One, a big part of elections is name recognition. Being the more recognizable name gives a proven effect.

Two, people respond to candidates looking weaker. Surviving an assassination attempt makes you look strong. Dying makes you look weak. And the entire Republican party is just following Trump's lead at this point, no one's been able to replicate what he can do. Consciously one might feel sympathy but subconsciously one feels weakness.
