I do not know enough about Ecuadorean politics to form an opinion on this, but I hope it does not portend a future of violent western intervention in Latin American politics, which would just be a replay of the past. Some Republican presidential literally want to invade Mexico, which seems insane, but America has done it in the past, and I also thought overturning Roe v. Wade was insane... Hopefully we get more news soon of who the shooter was, and his motivation.

Crime went up after Rafael Correa left office. His sucessor, Lenin Moreno, was a pos that betrayed Correa and sold the country to the US.
In September 2022, Villavicencio claimed he was the target of an assassination attempt after his Quito home was allegedly attacked by gunfire.
His assassination occurred less than two weeks before the general election. A day prior to his death, Villavicencio made a report to the Justice Ministry about an unnamed oil business.
On the day of the assassination, Villaviencio's party also said that several armed men attacked their offices in Quito.
