He reached the peak of his wealth at the same time as the 24 hour news channel and the internet were becoming mainstream accessible things, so to many people he's still the embodiment of "what can happen with a bit of hard work"

      Therefore anyone who buys into that nonsense is likely to hold him up with a great deal of respect.

      Because he's spent like 100 billion dollars on trying to eradicate polio, and he has name sake educational institutions and buildings in like every country.

      He's famous, and the only public persona part of him today to hate is that he was rich and stomped out his competition.
