But the subway tunnels had monsters in them. So it's a give-and-take.

I can never tell how much of the monsters in FFVII are actually diegetic or whether they mostly only exist out of a mix of mechanical necessity and genre convention.

But it is really funny to think about people being told not to wander off the marked hiking trails around Costa del Sol or else they will be attacked and mauled to death by a pack of wild matryoshka dolls

In FF7 the monsters are created by lifestream energy. This can happen in one of three ways, there's a natural method where the lifestream of the planet comes out of the planet in various places (like a lava flow), it mutates animals into monsters. The unnatural way is that mako power plants cause this to occur with the waste products they dump into the surrounding environment. Then there's the third way which is through human injecting mako directly into their bodies which is what Hojo's experiments are all about.

There's a part in Cosmo Canyon where it's discussed that monsters have been increasing lately and that it coincided with the construction of all the mako plants.

Yeah I could never figure that out either, but I think lore wise the monsters were supposed to be byproducts of mako energy I think? And also Hojo experimenting.

It is nearly impossible to create a dystopia worse than the current world. That is why people like them, they are aspirational.

There's also an expressway though iirc it's incomplete in sector 0 and absolutely destroyed in sector 6

Wasn’t there a plot point around the avalanche guys not having tickets or something ? It’s been 20 years since I played it but I thought there was something like that

iirc you needed security clearance to take the train to restricted areas like the reactors, don't remember cloud and co. having to buy tickets.

I think it was more like you need a valid ID to take the train up to the plate period. The train seems to mostly be there to funnel cheap labor and consumer money upward while the ID system is meant to keep the system's ugliness contained in the slums
