For those who don't know , It was used in England until the early 20th century to describe the Liberal Party (same as the Conservaties are Tories) and to some exteny occasionally today to describe the Lib Dems. It originated as the party of trading industrialists and anti-feudalists in early 18th century Britain but suffered several splits, especially on the French Revolution. Hilariously Edmund Burke was one.
