From what I read, it seems like if she just shot the guy she might have gotten off. I think the big thing that sunk her was lighting the house on fire and stealing the car.
That being said, it's a fucking miscarriage of justice that it even got that far in the first place. Dude was already arrested and released on multiple sex crime charges and possession of a ton of CSAM.
Its fucking disgusting that our legal system lets these vulnerable people just fend for themselves and the second they do a crime against their abusers they get treated like the bigger criminal.

this is just a headline with no details but the fact she was 17 really stands out to me, seems like they'd have to go out of their way to prosecute her case as an adult to get such a high sentence which is just another infuriating layer.
the bbc article says she accepted a plea deal because a trial had a possibility for a life sentence, idk if that was a good move or not in a normal country she would be acquitted by a jury but this is america
