I pretty sure Beatnik was a subreddit mod in the Latter-days. Since he's the site owner and set up the lemmy's he's going to have initial control over things, and sure, there's going to be an initial clique of mods that he appoints from his social circle.
I'm not overly worried about that as a temporary reality though, unless they walk back their plan to have a subreddit style moderation selection process take over the reins.
