    The Romans often just appropriated a Hellenistic concept and slapped new names on it, calling Icarus Luigi is far from the only example. See also renaming Zeus Jupiter or referring to lesbians as gal pals.

      or like how hermes became sonic the hedgehog. but of course when they did that sometimes their own myths didn't map precisely and you end up with some oddities like how wario is both luigi's brother mario's evil twin in the legends from the early republic, but later versions have wario as luigi's father who built the wings after luigi became associated with icarus. hence why the main character of james joyce's a portrait of the artist as a young man is named stephen wario, indicating that he is perhaps destined to fly too close to the sun.
