What he did not realize is there's a large chapter of the KKK in said town obsessed with birth rates and other shit, so of course they're welcoming to a white family.
He genuinely didn't know and felt bad I didn't want to visit because...you know...I'm not white. Even though I can sometimes pass for white, the klansmen there are old-school anti-papist, anti-Irish/Mediterranean, and antisemites.
