Very cool and interesting video on a topic I know almost nothing about
I knew it was saveitforparts before I even clicked. I have a couple SDR dongles I pick up a stuff with, APT/HRPT weather images from NOAA/METEOR, GOES, and I have a antenna pointed at a local water tower a couple miles away with repeaters for EMS/police. ADSB, and when the ISS does SSTV I try to get in on those but since I still hand track the ISS I always do terrible w those. Someone nearby has a wireless weather station that uploads to AmbientWeatherNetwork/WU that I can pick up with a SDR dongle so I can monitor the weather as local as it gets, as quick as the data gets broadcasted.
I am a hobby electronics guys so I understand that there are radio emissions everywhere but once I got my first good SDR and was able to get a good representation on a waterfall I was absolutely floored by how much shit is out there, in the air, for you to pick up. All you need is some metal cut to the proper length and put in the proper shape, and those signals are yours too.
I have this one saved, and once I get time, I’ll be trying to pick these up too.
I didn't do too great, but I managed to snag these images from the ISS a while ago:

This was with a stationary vertical whip antenna though. If I had used a handheld yagi or something it would probably have gone better. I actually still have audio recordings of the signal. Here's what it sounds like.

This is fucking fascinating.
There just so much out there to geek out on, really.
