It takes very little effort to find an article from Western state propaganda decrying Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas as authoritarian and rife with human rights abuses. This is the natural reaction the US has to any successful liberation movement. This fairly long report from Jason Cohen, a socialist who travelled to Nicaragua one week ago, should quell any suspicions.
He describes a country with high political consciousness among the masses, who are working to construct critical infrastructure for the country and their communities. There is a virtual education system that is free across the entire nation, which serves the dual goal of democratizing education and ensuring that those in rural areas or without much free time for university can still achieve degrees and a quality education; and these classes cover technical skills in the production of infrastructure and agriculture, but also political and ideological education in order to counter the fascist propaganda produced by imperialist nations abroad.
While Nicaragua is deeply invested in its nationality and national figures who led to their socialist revolution, such as Sandino, they are also immensely proud of their indigneous history, recognizing it as also part of their anti-colonial history which continues to the present day. Additionally, they honour the struggles of other nations on the continent, such as the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela, as well as Castro in Cuba and Allende in Chile. Countries around the world are also celebrated and admired, such as Burkina Faso; during the Reagan administration, Nicaragua and Burkina Faso were comrades in arms, and now Traore is continuing the legacy of Sankara's anti-imperialism in the present. Perhaps most relevant today is their dedication towards Palestine, involving the creation of the Parque Palestina (shown in the post image), in which the Palestinian flag flies alongside the flag of Nicaragua. In July, Leila Khaled of the PFLP gave a speech in Nicaragua, in which the solidarity of the two nations was highlighted.

Is Iran seriously going to fumble its relationship with Russia in an attempt to gain favor with the west?
Iran has its own priorities when it comes to blocking the Zangezur Corridor. It wants to make money from north-south transit fees. It doesn't want a stronger Azerbaijan. It doesn't want a more influential Turkey. To that effect it has a long standing relationship with Armenia. A Baku controlled Zangezur means in effect Armenia and Iran no longer share a border. Unfortunately for the iranians their only partners in this are the armenians, who have no realistic political pathway to move forward that doesn't mean putting themselves at odds with everybody else in the region.
At the end of the day Iran and Russia have been driven together by NATO aggression. Iran's doctrine is defensive and I can't imagine they won't eventually fold on this issue.
They should probably start by not selling the Russians any more weapons if this is how Putin is going to act.
tbqh that would just isolate Iran further and for no gain whatsoever. like, what's the plan here? invest in infrastructure inside of Iran or we won't trade with you? that's just a reason to not invest in Iran. this would elevate Iran to biggest loser in the caspian region.
You are right. Iran should sell Russia weapons that the Russian military relies on in the war, that Iran is now going to face more sanctions over, and then thank Russia for calling to cut Iran off from trade roots in a show of gratitude.
I'm not sure if 'cut off from trade routes' is the adequate descriptor here. Yeah, if Armenia remains isolated then I guess Iran can make more money. But I don't think there are any north-south trade alternatives going through Iraq. Nor will India fully endorse a route that connects it to Central Asia through Pakistan rather than Iran. Ultimately, the NSTC goes through Caspian railworks and seaworks, it requires the Azeris who also want to do east-west trade through Zangezur with Turkey and the EU. So Iran has to play ball there as well.
These are complex negotiations in a region that is gonna explode in connectivity, in every direction. I don't think anyone is gonna be outright cut-off unless they are a failed state or isolate themselves. Hell, if Armenia could talk about east-west trade connections not long after losing the war I'm sure Iran will reach a settlement with the Russians.
