I think that it's actually a taste thing (in the same way of if you like the taste of wine or not).
However to analyze "why" it's funny, it's probably mostly taboo, so like, poop and stuff related to poop is poison and unsanitary. So in the good old Freudian fashion we laugh at it because it reminds us of our death. :Lmk
Oh yeah I buy that as a social angle. I was more just going why scatological humor is funny from a psychological (albeit Freudian analysis drawing on his work on jokes, therefore not "empirical" but vibes). I really like your connection to the social group though.
