You either like it or you don't shrug-outta-hecks but honestly even as someone who generally kinda likes the peepeepoopoo schtick, ppb specifically is mostly played out. I still majorly appreciate the people who put in a little effort to disguise their link to https://hexbear.net/PPB as a gag to get a fascist to click it, but just dropping the emote and running away giggling is meh. It's not bad it's just boring and doesn't carry the same weight or creativity as getting a hog to click on it themselves.

I think the reason ppb works is that it brings the same level of dignity and intellectual rigor as those it is posted at. It simply dismisses bad takes as not worthy of a serious response. This is a good tool for avoiding protracted arguments with debate-bro pseudo-intellectuals. More generally - poop jokes aren't meant to serve as high comedy, the crudity is the point. The cheap shock value is a feature, not a bug.

I'll be straight with you, I think toilet humor isn't that funny and fart-centric humor to just be gross. It's just me though .. but yeah idk

This is a huge break between myself and my partner. I find farts, poop, and all sorts of gross stuff funny. Her reaction is disgust.

I think that it's actually a taste thing (in the same way of if you like the taste of wine or not).

However to analyze "why" it's funny, it's probably mostly taboo, so like, poop and stuff related to poop is poison and unsanitary. So in the good old Freudian fashion we laugh at it because it reminds us of our death. :Lmkfoucault-madness

Also poop is a funny word.

Oh yeah I buy that as a social angle. I was more just going why scatological humor is funny from a psychological (albeit Freudian analysis drawing on his work on jokes, therefore not "empirical" but vibes). I really like your connection to the social group though.

if you're looking for an intellectual reason why poo poo jokes are funny, you won't get one. poo poo is just funny. it could be a part of the general irony poisoning i guess.

Feel the exact same way. PPB is pretty funny to send to chuds but yeah farts, poops, crap, all that stuff.. just grosses me out more than anything and doesn't make me laugh

Scatological humour can be an excellent way of coping with the less savoury aspects of being an online community that allows anyone to sign up and participate

We could have our fifty-page essay-style arguments with these people about why they're wrong and bad, but in the effort of saving time and mocking their bad actions, it's easier to just mock them with an image of a pig pooping on itself

It's really no different than calling them a shithead or a jackass

So in short, sometimes, poo poo funny

My personal take is that the vulgarity serves two purposes - directed outword it condemns deliberate ignorance, unwillingness to reconsider entrenched beliefs, and often just outright monstrous beliefs as unworthy of further discussion. It's also often deployed after someone brings out slurs.

Essentially, it's a vulgar but harmless response used when a discussion has strayed beyond the point where good faith can be extended.

Internally, i think it's part of the anti-civility culture of dirtbag leftists. Vulgarity rejects civility discourse and respectability politics. I think it's notable that our transgressive language, while gross, doesn't target any group of people or involve prejudice or oppressive language. It's offensive to people who value "civil discussion", but ultimately harmless. In contrast with other online cultures who try to be "edgy" using slurs and bigotted language.

I guess a third function is that it's silly and absurd, and serves to bring the mood up. We spend a lot of time talking about absolutely horrific crimes against humanity and unspeakable violence. The prospects for the future are not good. The ridiculous peepee poopoo language breaks that up, sort of shocks the mind out of doomerism and despair. For me at least it's good for morale.

Look, you're either one of God's beautiful children or you're stuck with us in the swamp mud of thinking poop and pee is funny. Sometimes it's nice to let the wind out of your own sails when you're filling yourself up with your own hot air to totally mix metaphors. It's nice to remember hexbear isn't a SERIOUS and joyless place and it's appropriate that you have to see a poop emoji with 10 000 upbears to get back to the level we should be at as a forum. When one of the theory heads writes a wonderful dissertation on like Irish literature or some cool materialist analysis of something current it'd be all too easy to forget that you're allowed to blow off steam and be more casual too and just vibe out

No lol I'm not ragging on you, that's just why I personally appreciate the pee pee poo poo posts. It's dumb, toilet humor is dumb, it's okay not to get it - not getting it means you're normal

        Bad punctuation, sorry.

I was saying I don't think I could pitch it to you, since I've tried pitching toilet humor to my wife for going on 10 years and she's still not a fan.

If it makes you feel any better I felt zero compulsion to respond to you. I genuinely wanted to help you out and be understood so thanks for asking for clarification and putting yourself out there. :)

Farts are funny, piss is funny, poop is funny. shrug-outta-hecks There's nothing really to explain about it, there's really no depth to it. The thought of these things is just humorous.
