the train train spent the entire 25 minutes continuously moving, stopping, and then reversing, everyone that it was “moments from clearing the track” the entire time

We do a little trolling :train-sicko:

A bunch of dorks that have never lived anywhere near where freight rail operates. About half the places I've lived were not too far from train yards, this is very expected behavior in those areas.

Same mindset as the people who spend 20 minutes looking for a parking spot so they dont have to walk 2 minutes to the store.

I guess you could say the train was partaking in Twitchcon with its movement patternkelly

Carbrains, after spending decades opposing pedestrian infrastructure, when there isn't a crossing directly in front of them so they can cross train tracks to get back inside their cars:

Im familiar with these crossings. Long trains are dropping off or picking up at the port - Dole imports come in there, but also some chemical/fuel tanks i think mostly bound for the navy shipyard. Shunting always causes the long train to go back and forth between the convention center and petco park, obstructing at least 2 level crossings, although pedestrians can take the mentioned foot bridge. Freight traffic is restricted to the evenings, due to the many level crossings and shared tracks, including single track portions, with Amtrak and the local COASTER commuter train from san diego union station all the way to orange county

This is one of the reasons to always take transit to DTSD rather then driving a car.

How long is that “short walk” actually? I don’t have a great sense of scale from the picture. If that walk is like a half mile down the road that’s 20 minutes out of your way

this is normal in south dakota where trains only ever move at 5 mph or less anyway... they do this shit constantly.. anytime you see a train crossing sign flashing you know you're in for a good hour wait or more

I was about to dig into the railway for blocking the tracks, as freight railway companies are known to run unnecessarily long trains that block crossings, sometimes blocking ambulances for example. However, this is right next to the big freight yard for the port, so it's normal and fine for the train to move backwards and forwards like that, that's how all the freight cars get sorted. I have included an explainer image drawn in MS paint as God intended:
