A few years back, when Golden Dawn were consolidating their power amidst the debt crisis, so many short-sighted Westerners sneered at Greece, as if it was going to be an isolated incident that would only happen in an inferior southern country. Now the far-right are running rampant across Europe. It's nice to see Greece leading the way in anti-fascism. It is possible. May we see the same in other countries soon.

There is always work to be done, but Greeks should be proud of the steps taken so far. Take a look at countries like the UK or Italy who have capitulated to the far-right with very little pushback, and disastrous consequences. You can always count on Greeks to hit the streets, protest, and make results like this happen. From the very docile and apathetic UK political scene I admire this quality.

Yeah I was in the protest outside the court. It was fucking massive. It was 100% peaceful but like 5 minutes after the verdict the piggies started shit for literally no reason other than that they were pissed their guys lost probably.

But no sentences yet? Or am I missing something in the article?

Yeah, I had a quick look on twitter, and seems they're not that far along yet.
According to this, sentences should be coming over the next few days:

Sentencing expected in the coming days. Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos and ex party MPs, including current MEP Yiannis Lagos, could face 5 to 15 years in prison - or significantly less if judges consider mitigating circumstances.

Good digging comrade. I wonder whether there will be much to mitigate considering how high up in the organisation these guys were. Guess we'll see.

It's possible, considering the severity of the crime, that they set the sentencing for another date while they wait on reports (background/psychological assessment, etc.).

They're not waiting for anything, they had 7 years to wait. But yeah it's been left for another day, not sure if that is a formality or they are just doing it to alleviate pressure.

Yeah, I worded that badly, I meant they're waiting for sentencing material etc. From what I read about Greek criminal procedure, the Judge will need to consider sentencing submissions from the parties and mitigating circumstances before imposing sentences for each accused, and write up their reasons for decision. Given this trial has taken 7 years, it makes sense that they need a few days to do all that stuff.

It's gonna be tomorrow from what I heard. Their lawyers are now scrambling to find ways to get them a smaller sentence, hope it doesn't work.

Talking about lawyers, I used to hang out with the son of one of the Golden Dawn lawyers. He is a trans man and a leftist, as an extra fuck you to his dad lol

Fuck, that's quick, but considering how intense things seems to be, it's probably the smart thing to do.

I could never do defence for fascists— the lawyer's son sounds like a pretty cool guy though :zizek-ok:

The lawyer chose it 100%. All of them did. He was also a candidate for the EU parliament with Golden Dawn.

I'd say I'm surprised, but he sounds like exactly the kind of person who'd be a lawyer for Golden Dawn.

The sentences will be announced in a few days. I don't know why they did it that way.
