Imagine being told your entire childhood how genius the American system is; how our leadership structure is the only one in the world (and the only one that has ever been) capable of being a fair, righteous, humanitarian global hegemony.

I always considered myself a smart kid, but god damn did it take me an embarrassing amount of time to wake up from that shit. Sure, I had my criticisms, but the American system in its design still held this untouchable, infallible quality. Since fully discarding any trust in the US systems at their very core half a decade ago, everything has seemed so obvious in confirming the idiocy and unworkability of it all.

My question is for long-time (10+ years) self-identifying enemies of the state - did the mainstream discourse always look so cartoonishly satirical? Because this shit these days...lmao

My friend who is a lot older and the one who really got me into leftism was extremely leftist during the Iraq war days. And a Muslim immigrant. And they always tell me that everything may seem crazy right now, but anyone who was aware during that time can see it's only like 75% as bad as it was then.
