    It's more basic than that

    His control is based on a network of oligarchs and loyalists

    So he keeps them happy, via corruption

    And if they trimmed a little off the top, maybe no one would notice

    But the corruption is grotesque and people suffer (much like the US)

    So what do they do?

    They come up with increasingly insane solutions to stay in power

    Attack Georgia for nationalistic pride, same with Crimea

    Of course this is bad for Russia overall, but the national good was never a goal

    They keep doing it and it keeps working

        Yea, this is a good take until it gets into geopolitics. Putin would have been coup’d if he didn’t invade Crimea. It’s absolutely vital to Russia that they have that port and they’ve fought brutal wars over it in the past.

          Less vital in the era of climate change, as Artic ports are able to stay open year round.

          But still a big deal to have access to the Mediterranean.
