Had a huge tree in our neighbor's yard fall on the power lines yesterday afternoon, cutting power until 3AM this morning. Had to sleep in Kid1's room to keep her comfortable. She has a full sized bed but holy hell that matrice is not made for adults. I slept like shit (she slept great). My body still feels like trash. I also caught some new sickness after all the shit I was dealing with a month ago. Sore throat, runny noise, headaches, body aches. That was at the start of the week but mostly better now. Kid1 also had it. Fun times!

Ugh, that's no fun. We've already been getting a little sick more often since our toddler just started preschool.

Any updates figuring out what you have?

One of the fun things about getting older is realizing I can't just sleep on whatever surface I want and bounce back the next morning...

No idea what I have still. I'm 100% convinced I tore my hernia repair. I've had discomfort in my belly button area, it feels more solid then before. My blood work showed elevated white blood cells and my doc is having me see a hematologist. This seems to track with the fevers and doxycycline. I moved that rider lawn mower, probably made a small tare in my hernia repair, which became inflamed and caused my fevers, the doxycycline stamped out the inflammation, which lessoned my fevers. My discomfort is likely related to this tare. The doctor is also having a ct scan of my abdomen as well. They're more concerned with the hematology report and its findings but I have a feeling its going to come back normal.

I honestly have no idea. I'm not even sure "tear" is the right way to describe it. I guess the ct scan will tell me for sure. The mesh is supposed to make the area more durable and less likely to reinjure.

I don't really have anything to report from this last week. We had a sick kid but he's over it now. Our oldest was claiming he felt sick this morning but he's bouncing off the walls so doubt

I decided to start helping out with our local Food Not Bombs and yesterday was my first day. I haven't worked directly with the homeless since pre-pandemic so it's nice finally getting back to it.

Kid is doing Mandarin classes on the weekends now, which largely frees me up from my usual duties of taking her to the park since she's so tired out now. We've tried, so, so many options and so far it seems the most viable one is a 40 minute bus ride to the friendly neighbourhood car sewer up north (we live in a very walkable area so it's always very jarring seeing buildings so fucking far apart from one another, punctuated with endless single family homes, strip malls and big box stores, not to mention the ENDLESS FUCKING PARKING LOTS agony-consuming ).

Other than that I'm mostly just waiting with baited breath to see what our provincial election results are going to be next weekend, with the kid being the most impacted by the results by far. It's likely to be a very close call.

The conservative shit heads just earlier today released their education platform. It's just as horrible as you'd expect. Bring cops back into schools, bring back the letter grading system for grades 4-9, bring back all the standardised tests that we spent the last 7 years getting rid of, give subsidies for parents that home school their smooth-brained hellspawn, end SOGI123 (sex orientation / gender inclusive programme). They're out of their fucking minds, just the worst possible people in this fucking province.

The rest of the shit that they're planning on doing (like ending carbon tax, returning tolls to roads, privatising auto insurance) I don't think would really affect us at all because it's all car brained shit and we don't own one. But it's just really hard describing what's going on to this kid who is going to be directly impacted by this election which they have absolutely no control over whatsoever. My wife can't even vote either since she's not a full citizen yet.

How early did you start your kid in Mandarin classes? I took some as a teen, but didn't stick with it. I'm starting to pencil it in as a thing for the "once we get out of daycare" list lol

I think we started when they were like 7 or 8? Italki app has some good online instructors for good prices if you can't find any meatspace lessons.

We're all doing well over here. Wife learned from her trauma therapist her parents have strong narcissistic traits, which explains a lot, and is taking a 6 month break to decide what role they'll have in our lives if any. Fall weather has been unusually warm so we've been taking advantage of local pumpkin patches and the kids really enjoy that!

Kid2 woke up at 2am last night. It took me 2 hours to get him almost to sleep. He woke up angry. He didn't want a bottle, he didn't want his binky until he calmed down. The only thing that helped him was singing songs to him. We had to black out the room once he calmed down to get him to sleep at all.

I'm so tired. Physically and Mentally. Kid1 we had her in her own room so she could learn to get herself to sleep. We would have to let him sleep in the living room downstairs to replicate that. I don't see that happening.
