Finally finished the whole group! From left to right: Inquisitor Coteaz, Interrogator, Sister of Battle, Scrollboi, Feral Worlder, Mystic, Servitor, Booksy the Book Skull, Joe Krabo, and "Daemonhost".

I'd painted up Coteaz years ago (and it's good I did because his new model sucks lol). Eventually they'll all be based in the same style as Coteaz but the texture paint I use is all dried up.

Close-ups of individual models in comments.

Apparently Hexbear doesn't like me uploading so many images, so I'll post the rest in a bit. Edit: They're all up!

This squad took me like 4 months on-and-off (mostly off, lol). Don't worry about getting things done quickly, just have fun doing it!

Ty, the new Inquisitorial Agent kit has its problems (you need 2 sets for a full Kill Team meaning you'll have dupes, their stats are real bad in 40k), but the models you get are perfect for representing an eclectic bunch of weirdos.

Re: Rules, unfortunately the current rules are extremely limited and non-customizable because GW execs shit their pants at the idea of people being able to use things that don't come in a specific box. Catach-arco-flagellents sound cool as hell.

          The weapons options are:

          • Everybody (except servitor) gets a bolt pistol (with a bonus AP) and "Agent Melee Weapon" (basically an S3 chainsword)
          • Servitor gets one of plasma cannon, multi-melta, or heavy bolter
          • 1 model can take a plasma pistol (2 if it's a 10-person squad)
          • 1 model can take an eviscerator (2 if it's a 10-person squad)
          • 1 model can take a mystic staff (2 if it's a 10-person squad)

Looks great! I want to get into WH40k mini painting next year after I finish my new furniture!

Funny thing is that I'm not interested in playing the game at all, the appeal of 40K to me is the lore and the cool minis

40k is just the tip of the iceberg of tabletop wargames. Even within 40k, there are multiple games (Necromunda, Inquisitor, Kill Team, etc.). There are even solo games you can play.

The cool part about minis is you can use the same ones for different games, whether it's skirmish games or mass battles or RPGs.

Extremely understandable, I play the game but it's not great.

Just wanting to paint and collect is unfortunately a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you don't need to paint 30 basic infantry, which is good since they aren't very interesting, but on the other, most of the discount boxes come with those boring basic infantry, and GW is notorious for their ridiculous markups on the prices for heroes.

Yeah, in fact, since I'm not interested in the game itself, I'm thinking it would be a much better idea for me in the long run to buy a resin 3D printer and print my own minis. I already have an FDM printer but it's too low-res for great looking miniatures.

Every year or so I see something like this and think "damn, I should get into 40k" and then I dont because its expensive and nobody around here plays and the couple that do are almost certainly weird racist freaks

Depending on what part of it interests you, there are other, cheaper ways to engage with the hobby.

On the painting/modelling side, you can get 3d prints, recasts, or minis for other game systems. The cheapest are probably generic minis from Reaper or WizKids; the base crab model I painted is $4.50USD on Reaper's site, for instance.

On the playing the game side, you can buy Tabletop Simulator on Steam and play 40k online. It's a bit janky, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper ($10 for TTS on sale vs several hundred for physical). There should be other players online, probably in discord servers, not all of whom will be nazis. Some people even made a coop "horde mode" that uses a simple flow-chart for the "AI" opposition so you could solo play if you wanted to.

Having a group is definitely the biggest hurdle to get over, though. I'm just lucky that I had a few friends that all decided to start 40k at the same time.

Kill Team is a great option if you want 40k on a small scale/budget. In terms of time (painting/building), it’s a LOT less work, and in terms of money, it’s much more affordable since Kill Teams are usually just 10 models.

Heck, you could go on eBay and get 10 models for 30 bucks, and you’re set.

It’s also, as far as I know, simpler and quicker to play than full-scale 40k, which should be a bonus for newcomers.

Wish I had the ventilation for a 3d printer, they're neat. A guy I know has a printer but he charges enough that I wouldn't even be saving much money lol.

I miss playing warhams. I was really into it back in 4th/5th edition, playing with paper proxies on the dorm room floor, energy drink cans and textbooks as terrain, but now I have all the models I could want but nobody to play with.

I have the One Page Rules models for not-Tau and not-Tyranids, but finding complete model sets that actually look like 40k dudes makes printing a whole army hard. You can cobble together some mix and match "Star Marines" or "Space Elves" from individual model releases, but you'll end up pretty limited on what dudes you can take.

Unless someone knows a good resource for that kind of thing.

I think My Mini Factory and Cults 3D have 1-for-1 scans of entire sprues and models, they just aren't listed under their GW name. So instead of "Tyranid Warrior," you have to search for stuff like "Bug Lizard Guardian."

For example, here's an "Angry Mantis Cthulhu" (totally not a Lictor):

      Angry Mantis

      "Termi Grunt Stalker"

Oh, lots of soul in this little gang. In fact, I’m prepping some Tyranids for priming as we speak. I might post some of them here when they’re finished. I’m a bit worried about OPSEC though.

Nope, it's one of the "Mummy Sandkings" by Reaper minis. The crab ("Dire Crab" on their site) is also from them. Got them in a Kickstarter a few years ago, figured I'd get some use out've them.
