I have no problem with forum rules/guidelines about ageism, in principle. I have more common cause with a boomer living in poverty, than I do with a wealthy millennial. But as the others said, context on your situation would be welcome.

ageism is already against the code of conduct, hence why the aforementioned post was removed. one post doesnt warrant a public response. send links to the massively upvoted “ugly comments” and we may reconsider

I'm gonna need more context. Old age is something that happens to everyone if they're lucky enough to survive long enough. You'll get broad agreement on this site that the elderly should be provided for to give them a safe and dignified old age, and crucially, still be integrated into society, not isolated so they're dying of loneliness.

This does not mean that it's wrong to say that way too many of America's politicians are way too old to hold the jobs they have. good-morning

So I'm gonna need to know if you're pissed because someone said Nancy Pelosi is out to lunch and should retire, because I'm gonna stand by that statement. I'd even argue that keeping her in her position is elder abuse.

On the other hand, if you're pissed because someone said something shitty like the elderly are useless because they don't contribute to society or something, then I'm totally with you.

    So what's the context?

What's the goal of hexbear? Every time I see a post from hexbear... It's not for me. Is it just a support group kind of thing?

Edit: I see. It's the new home of everyone from Tumblr.

0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself sad. He is starting to suspect Kras Mazov fucked him over personally with his socio-economic theory. It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. Instead of building Communism, he now builds a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world.

Boomer is not a slur, and treating it like one comes across as in bad faith. We've dealt with wrecker shit stirrers for a long time now and this behavior is really played out by this point.

If you're being sincere and being treated like a fed irks you please provide additional context. If not please reformulate your approach to at least be funnier.

Would you ask for context if the request were for a ban on racism, transphobia, etc?

Not transphobia. But racism, like ageism and other -isms, does need context. For instance, you can make the claim that "cracker" is a racist term. Strictly speaking, I agree with that; I just don't mind that form of racism (not that it matters, but I am white). This is why in general I try to use terms like white supremacy, patriarchy, etc. Those things have specific, systemic harms.

Ageism is a harder one to pin down. For instance, I saw a crossword clue a while back where the answer was "ageism," the clue was "A senator might experience it" (or something similar). Well, sure. Being old clearly helps you gain the immense power of being a senator.

I also think "ok boomer" isn't a slur the same way your other examples are. Being a boomer brings some pretty decent benefits, not to the same extent but in much the same way being white brings a lot of benefit.

But I'm not denying that ageism exists & brings specific harms in some contexts. I just don't think there's as easy a blanket "this is ageist, take it down" as there is for patriarchy et al.

I would ask for context whenever I feel like extra context would benefit myself or others, in making up our individual opinions if an offense objectively occurred or might have just been subjectively perceived. Nothing personal, I'm just my own sentient meat bag.

You're posting on a glorified discussion board. In order for me to know where I stand on the discussion at hand, yes, I need to decide for myself what I feel is accurate and measured. Otherwise there's nothing of substance to contribute.

I now get the feeling you're being both reactionary and a contrariant, so I'm just gonna disengage.

I mean, yes? How long have you been Hexbear without making a racist joke against Italians, Poles, or one of those other types of people who deserve it?

yes if I hadn't seen the objectionable post?

Do you think "ok n____r" or ok "f____t" would be a joke?

those are slurs because of the structural violence against Black and queer people respectively. are you going to argue that anti-cracker-aktion is a slur because it offends the lmayo that wander in here? discrimination against older people sucks but discrimination alone doesn't make a slur - where's the structural violence? who's been lynched for being a boomer?
