The popularity of kpop boy bands has done more to mitigate the damage done by decades of desexualization of Asian men by Western media than anything else I've experienced in my life.

I’ve noticed a lot of my close friends who explicitly weren’t into Asian men when we were in HS are now obsessed with K Pop and dating Asian men. While preferences exist, representation does matter outside of idpol.

It has its problems behind the scenes but so does hip hop and punk which we both readily embrace as anthems of the working class

I think that any form of popular entertainment under capitalism will have problematic and exploitative mechanics behind the scenes, but that's much more a function of capitalism than it is any inherent feature of the genre.

The only people I've seen who are rabbidly anti-kpop are salty white dudes and weird Asian-incel types. The former are mad that we're now "stealing their women" or some shit. Stupid, but easy to understand.

The latter though. Holy shit, the latter. Something about Kpop being bad for Asian men because it's a CIA plot to make us look less masculine. Almost literally "Fellas, is it gay for women to be attracted to you?"

Yea I've seen both types. Salty white guys I can totally understand, but I will never understand those Asian dudes who get angry that other people are defying the stereotype

That's true, but it's not where these people are arguing from.

Plus, I'm honestly not sure if kpop is any worse than any of the other horrible entertainment industry practices anywhere in the world.
