kpop stans
The popularity of kpop boy bands has done more to mitigate the damage done by decades of desexualization of Asian men by Western media than anything else I've experienced in my life.
I’ve noticed a lot of my close friends who explicitly weren’t into Asian men when we were in HS are now obsessed with K Pop and dating Asian men. While preferences exist, representation does matter outside of idpol.
It has its problems behind the scenes but so does hip hop and punk which we both readily embrace as anthems of the working class
I think that any form of popular entertainment under capitalism will have problematic and exploitative mechanics behind the scenes, but that's much more a function of capitalism than it is any inherent feature of the genre.
The only people I've seen who are rabbidly anti-kpop are salty white dudes and weird Asian-incel types. The former are mad that we're now "stealing their women" or some shit. Stupid, but easy to understand.
The latter though. Holy shit, the latter. Something about Kpop being bad for Asian men because it's a CIA plot to make us look less masculine. Almost literally "Fellas, is it gay for women to be attracted to you?"
That's true, but it's not where these people are arguing from.
Plus, I'm honestly not sure if kpop is any worse than any of the other horrible entertainment industry practices anywhere in the world.
Yea I've seen both types. Salty white guys I can totally understand, but I will never understand those Asian dudes who get angry that other people are defying the stereotype
Cringe.
Shitting on teenage girls for liking things is a) super harmful b) punching down and c) sexist and reactionary.
K-Pop isn't significantly worse for the consumers or the artists than US Pop and anyone telling you it is is either coming from a place of sexism and xenophobia or has uncritically accepted talking points from people who are.
Shitting on K-Pop stans has the same energy as shitting on 14 year olds whose bedrooms are plastered with posters of Justin Beiber.
Both of you are making some sweeping assumptions about the K-pop fan base. That said, I agree it's normally not really different than people being obsessed with any other pop singers
I mean, regardless of the actual stats, I'd argue there's definitely a perception of K-Pop stans being teenage girls, but according to these demographics of what in December 2019 were the fanbases of the 8 most popular K-Pop groups, K-Pop stans are overwhelming female and disproportionately teenage.
No. Humans in their natural state don’t like anything except fucking and eating. Liking anything else is bourgeois capitalist conditioning.
There are, but they’re not Kpop stans. They’re just people who enjoy Kpop.
You’re good lmao I am an English teacher but I just learned the word tautology so I thank you for broadening my horizons😇
yeah, same here, it's why I made this comment. I seriously think interracial porn has had a huge hand to play with those guys calling people 'cucks' online.
The origin of 'cuckold' can be traced back to the Jim Crow era and even further with slavery. In the Jim Crow era, there were white men who used to go out and find a black man to fuck their wives, even flat out rape them. It was made as a point of humiliation to the white woman while the white husband got off to this. It happened in the days of slavery too, more so about painting the black man out to be an 'animal' who was taking the white woman. All this 'BLACKED' porn shit online is a call back to that.
There's a historical mobster named Mad Sam DeStafano, who is something of a mythical figure in history of the old Chicago Outfit. Mad Sam was a psychopath and pretty much a serial killer in the mob. One of the stories about him was where he went out on the streets and found a black man, who he took home to rape his wife and humiliate her, playing out a typical cuckold scene. The black guy was so terrified that they would turn around and report him to police, he went to the cops himself and told them about it.
