It was crazy. At this bus stop he was telling me about how a Harvard scientist created the coronavirus for the Chinese army, and how bill gates and soros are fucking us over with 5G, and how chemtrails will make us not be able to grow enough food in 50 years except for the rich. Idk if I'm sheltered and this is a common thing people see but holy shit that was weird. He was a vietnam vet who I guess did not turn out alright
people who are so far down the conspiracy hole are a failure on our part. these people know something is fucked up and are looking for an explanation as to what and why it is, and just never met the right people, fell for the red scare, can't decipher the difference, etc.
a lot of these republicans who are like this are just like slightly dumb but have their hearts in the right place and minds in the wrong place.
we have to find some way to get them here, because this is where they're supposed to be. they think the left is the democratic party. it's like if you had directions to a bar that was really cool, but when you show up it's a buncha libs, cause the cool bar was actually down another block. so you turn around and go as far away as possible, cause your ass fucked up the directions and we didn't have a big fucking sign or something that said "no not that one."

This is undoubtedly true of a lot who do fall into the trap. But there are a LOT of Qanon people who absolutely have a fash agenda that preceded their descent into batshit conspiracy obsession. It's not a coincidence that their collection of delusions are so comorbid with extreme reactionary politics. It's tempting to think of them as mostly misled victims of capitalism and hellworld, but nah, I've never encountered one whose "heart was in the right place" or even in the vicinity of the right place. Again, some of them who might otherwise be decent probably do exist out there, but be careful not to give one of them a pass just because their beliefs resemble those of someone who has a genuine mental illness.
