i was thinking it would be very helpful for Degrassi fans around the wider Frediverse to chat about one of the most iconic shows of all time. with over 20 years of canon and 20+ seasons of content, it is lore-rich and has a storied history as well as a cultural presence that outlives the show, with stars like Drake and Nina Dobrev making their mark in the world in their own right.
i think this comm would be good for the site as a community-building exercise. we could do a watch group and get everyone in on it. the show teaches themes like compassion, courage, and honesty, which i think are important for any leftist to develop and nurture.
it touches on LGBTQIA+ issues and is genuinely very progressive, even by today's standards. where most characters address the struggles of transfem people, Degrassi represents less-touched on groups such as transmasc and non-binary identities, going so far as to address things such as neopronouns with the gravity and respect they deserve.
anyway, thank you for reading and please make the comm
this show is the reason i decided god was ok with gay people in middle school
Ahhh this show shaped my personality until I was 20. Helped me get diagnosed with autism.
it's literally my special interest lol. i've seen all 18 seasons of next gen/next class probably upwards of 10 times... who is your fav character? we can do generations if you want
I'm OG next generation trained. So up until the Emma, Liberty, Manny era graduation. I reject the Emma Spinner pair.
My favorite used to be Emma but now it might be Paige. Looking back on the show and Emma was a menace, no clue why I liked her so much haha.
+1 it's a show I love so much and very meaningful to me as a queer person. it's not perfect, but ahead of it's time in a lot of ways. I'm also not someone who thinks it's perfect and have no problem criticizing parts that fall short heavily. @gaystyleJoker@hexbear.net and I bonded a lot over our appreciation of the show and did a rewatch of Next Gen and Next Class last year (300+ episodes lol) and we're gonna do it again soon. we did like a mini degrassi night on a server we share with some friends and it was so fun, would love to talk about it more and get watch threads for more people now too
I agree. Also I think there should be a CanCon Smash Bros style fighting game. Have the 3 main trailer park boys characters rotate like Brawl's Pokémon Trainer, Red Green would have a Snake style movement full of gadgets, Rick Mercer has a final smash where he leads you down alley ranting about some obscure feature of Canadian politics you don't care about and then beats you up tells you he's a gay convative and then you're stun locked cause while kinda shocking does.make dense when you put the pieces together. Who are the Degrassi reps?
Bob and Doug as Ice Climber types, KITH as a group, have the presenter of Just for Laughs: Gags as a miniboss. Shaun Majumder as the character select voice narrator.
Just for laughs gags could also be a pikeball eaque item. Kids in the Hall can each get their own character and people can be fire emblem mad about it, I fucking love kith. The chicken cannon from royal Canadian air farce as an arcing projectile thst auto fires like a medium range hard to aim version of the hammer.

"There's a voice, that keeps on calling me. Down the road, that's where I'll always be~"
we probably need the main fighters from the series so it would be an old gen rep in Spinner and a new gen rep in Eli. Spinner would be the heavy brawler type while Eli would use his cane to fight like a swordsman
