These kind of events just prove to me what a right wing and neo-liberal shithole that Reddit truly is.
These are the 5 things I mostly come across randomly on Reddit without searching:
Pro-cop stuff fucking everywhere. Unresolved Mysteries used be a great sub for learning about cold cases that don't get much attention and were overlooked by the media and it largely sheds an eye on police incompetence in these cases. I can't tell you how many cases I've read on UM that truly boil down to the cops completely fucking up and not taking it seriously. To counter this, half of the user base are a bunch of bootlickers that just defend the cops no matter what after people bring up "this case could've been solved had the cops actually done their job". It used to be a great sub before all the cop worshipers showed up to argue with everyone "well actually, the cops did their job! You can't blame them for totally not taking it seriously, that person was poor anyway so fuck them for going missing."
RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA. Don't even have to explain this one.
China bad. Don't have to explain this one either.
Anti-communist stuff which usually ties into Russia and China stuff.
Posts about the BLM protests and rioters being a bunch of criminals. This ties into the Pro-cop stuff, but has it's own separate category due to how you can't escape it on city subs, and most of it is from fucking liberals just whining that the riots are hurting Biden.
I came to that realization when I went to a non-political thread in a non-political sub and somehow a conversation turned to undocumented immigrants and someone argued "I'm afraid of them not because I'm racist but because of the fact that they broke the law period by coming here, and if they'll break that law, who knows what other laws they're willing to break???" and it got 10k upboats and 40 wholesome chungus awards
Even people there who aren't outwardly/consciously reactionary demonstrate a reactionary way of viewing the world
I've noticed the same thing watching true-crime docs. Every crime scene saga is the same. A crime occurs, a perimeter is established around the scene, and then an investigator comes in, drops his pants and drags his bare ass across the floor while screaming the n-word, contaminating all the evidence and compromising the state's ability to make a case.
There has never in the history of cops been a by-the-books competent handling of a crime scene. Has never happened.
I can count on my hand how many cold cases I've seen of missing persons where the cops actually did their job and became stumped due to the case truly being a mystery and a crime scene that leaves a real puzzle. It happens, but it's so incredibly rare. 9 times out of 10, the cops screw up with the crime scene and/or the investigators hone in on witnesses that are family members, friends or "the wrong kind of people" and as a result, they don't even look at the entire picture and spend all their time and effort chasing leads that turn up as dead ends and trying to convict someone who is truly innocent.
Missing person cases are a true testament of how real the class war is. There are so many cases of police simply not giving a shit cause the person was poor. This is especially true when it comes to sex workers and the amount of them reported missing. Most of the time, police don't even bother investigating missing sex workers cause at the end of the day, the attitude is "well, they're whores, fuck them. If something bad happens to them, oh well!"
There is a reason why most serial killers focus on sex workers as marginalized people and manage to get away with it for so long. Police don't care and it usually comes down to family efforts to even push an investigation on them, and even there, police are still reluctant to comply and run a thorough investigation.
Those kind of cases come up all the time on true crime sub reddits, and especially on R/UnresolvedMysteries and it only takes an hour or so for someone to comment about the police's incompetence and then all the bootlickers rush to defend the cops and dehumanize the victim.
Not just poor people. Look into the Bruce McArthur saga here in Toronto. The gay community told the police there was serial killer targeting homosexuals, and the TPS did nothing. Today they are still discovering and exhuming bodies he buried across the assorted properties he was working on as a landscaper, all the victims gay men.
Most of the gay community are poor too, so yes, it goes back to the class war. Same with the indigenous people who are often targeted by killers in Canada as well as the US.
