You know, take all the pics in the dead of winter on a cloudy day, maybe after some rainfall. Use cool color filters. Show how much propaganda i.e. advertising dominates the scene. Just show it in all its depressing glory.

I'm not a good enough photographer to do this, so someone else take this idea and run with it.

I'm kinda have to ruin this for you a bit. Those places do look as depressing as they are, and really doesnt have much to do with filters. More like with a bunch of buildings not being maintained for decades, and gray muddy winter. That doesn't mean stuff ain't shitty in the US, but it also doesnt mean those dark pictures are representing a totally wrong picture of thins. These countries ARE poor, and with poverty you get depressing landscapes. In fact most of those pictures tend to show only picturesque stuff, not the truly horrible and dilapidated stuff usually. Now, there is a good argument to be made, that nobody shows the good sides as well, and that would be a good one.

Source: was depressed in Eastern European depressed landscape for the majority of my life.

Good point. I do find myself idealizing things from the Eastern Bloc and Soviet Union that I have no experience with.

Unless you’re well over 40 years old, you’re not going to have many memories of the actual buildings before they became in disrepair during capitalist austerity enforced by the collapse and looting of the former USSR.

Just grab some stock photos and apply filters. We believe in you. Post cringe.

Photography is bullshit you just point the thing at the thing and press the button. You could easily do this I believe in you comrade. If anyone tries to give you shit about "composition" and "overexposed" just kick em in the groin area.
