To analyze things from a pseudo-Marxist dialectical framework, I think that everyone appreciates art that caters to their tastes and is sometimes annoyed when presented with art that does not.

I don't think that's enough for them, or they'd be holding up the Dead Or Alive Volleyball franchise as the pinnacle of gaming. I think chuds are willing to tolerate the queerness in Automata because it's not really a major part of the game (IIRC it's mostly 2B's handler in one or two side quests?) and because they can fetishize them (hence the porn).

You raise a good point, but it must be noted that the pronoun selector is front-loaded, compared to the sidequests that are like 20 hours into the game and skippable.
