I mean, maybe it's because of the circles I'm in, but most of the women who outright told me they're "not like other girls" didn't mean it in the drama way.
They meant that they consider themselves straight women, but they're also basically grown adult tomboys, so they don't feel like they can relate very well when they hang out with very feminine presenting women, and hate being in environments where they feel a pressure to present as "feminine", like when they get shamed by other women for not wearing makeup, not wearing enough, wearing men's clothes, etc.
So, aside from other tomboys, they're uncomfortable maintaining a platonic relationship with straight men, as there's a sexual tension, with lesbian women, as there's a sexual tension, with other straight women, as they feel alienated and lookshamed, and usually wind up hanging around gay men the most.
Reddit shits on the phrase, and I'm aware of the implied personality type, but most of my good female friends, including my best friend, usually describe themselves that way, or similar.
I think if it were more common when they were younger, many of them would have instead identified as non binary, that way they could still admit an attraction to men while detaching a bit from the societal pressure to be "girly."
yeah im kinda a tomboy transgirl, i pass, and the pressure to go full femme is a bit maddening because staring at my face to put makeup on is one of my dysphoria inducers
like sure i love makeup when its on but the whole act of it sucks so hard
