There was some girl who scammed republicans with a fake story and used the money to pay for college a few years back, I can't find a link though. The real trick is randomly being the lucky chosen one out of the masses to have your grift go viral.
I think the trick here is that the grift is just to be a further right version of whatever the GOP state politicians are supporting. And getting their rubes to send you money based on that.
