I know this isn't the first strike for Proton either.

I'm not going to be giving people an email address that ends in Tuta or Tutamail, especially verbally.

You're really over thinking this if you believe even 10% of the people you interact with give a single fuck about a silly domain name

I’ve had people I’ve emailed assume I’m Russian because I sent it from my Yandex account

I care and I don't want to risk other people caring in the same way it would be considered unprofessional by some corporate types to have anything other than firstnamelastname@whatever as your address

      Show

They should have chosen a better name.

Yeah, words like Google were once silly too, but things like Floorp browser are absolutely affected by their name as far as adoption and perception.

Alright then, you do you... I just spell it out real quick, takes about 5 seconds, and if they laugh it's a great icebreaker to take another 5 seconds to plant a little seed in their head about taking back control of our digital lives. Some people are really receptive to this.

I do have one I use for other purposes, but if someone's goal is to be as private as possible, a domain with all your information attached seems to go against that, no? Since registrar can be compelled for your information?

Just depends on your goals, I guess. My name is too common to use anything sensible either way.

It depends, I mean my domains are behind a lot of obfuscations and stuff but. Main thing is however security and email privacy not anonymity. For that I use other solutions. Email should be avoided as much as possible all together if anonymity is the goal. Email for me when I want people to know who I am. Also nice to use yourstupidnewsletter@mydomain.ml and if there is an issue just block that one. And I know where the leak is if I get spam.

Just curious, do you worry that wearing a mask in public to protect yourself might be construed as unprofessional to these same "corporate types?"

If I'm being uncharitable, I don't think you're curious at all and are drawing a false equivalency between two completely different things to make what I said about a poorly picked software name seem more egregious and like my primary concern in all parts of life is how others perceive me over what is best for myself and others.

If I'm being charitable and/or misinterpreting, perhaps you mean that nobody should care what those people think in any circumstance because giving into their negative perceptions sometimes means giving into harmful behavior such as not masking or using more private/secure software due to its poorly picked name.

If Tuta was the only other company in the world, I'd settle for them no problem. And while I do mask in public, that doesn't mean that people staring at me isn't uncomfortable and anxiety inducing.

I think you understood the point I'm getting at, which, to your credit, you delivered more eloquently in your second paragraph than I've managed to do so in any of my comments in this thread.

Right on. Sorry for jumping the gun. Had too many instances on Lemmy of people inferring things I didn't mean.

All good, no need to apologize. You have a valid concern, and I agree these examples aren't the same, but IMO only by degrees of magnitude. I guess I'm just over giving a damn what others think about this stuff. Let me say sorry for coming off so prickly.
