I know this isn't the first strike for Proton either.
Edit: Andy replied on stormfront
There's a whole ecosystem and industry that is based on this premise: venture capital.
The key here is the wording. Notice how when the Democrats were in power 10 years ago he liked them, and now that the Republicans are in power, he likes them instead. This is just another tech CEO sucking up to whoever's in power. Zuckerberg is just the most famous of the arse kissers and brown nosers. The tech world is full of them, this was the stereotype of tech executives until Musk bought twitter.
the only thing that pig does for little guys is fuck them on epstein island. this dude is a clown for saying that. mf thinks trump is against “big tech” while he’s taking orders from elon musk
proton is a great asset to linux gaming. maybe since its open source someone else can take it over. once someone says some shit like this i absolutely do not trust them or what they might do
This is for Proton mail, just FYI. Not Proton the compatibility layer for Linux. I edited the OP to clarify.
Dammit I knew proton wasn't super special I just didn't want all my eggs in the google basket. I guess I have to move to tuta now but I've still got more than a year left on my proton sub
Can't say I'm that surprised. Proton always had bad vibes for me and has been the "secure" email of choice of chuds for years.
I've used it for several years and I'm looking to move off of it. Its still better than Gmail, but they made a donation to Bellingcat in the past through a community vote and seek out places for their VPN service where the government "subverts democracy" like Hong Kong. They've always been ran by libertarian techbros.
The only other good alternative seems to be Tuta though and as petty as it is, I'm not going to be giving people an email address that ends in Tuta or Tutamail, especially verbally.
I'm not going to be giving people an email address that ends in Tuta or Tutamail, especially verbally.
You're really over thinking this if you believe even 10% of the people you interact with give a single fuck about a silly domain name
I’ve had people I’ve emailed assume I’m Russian because I sent it from my Yandex account
I care and I don't want to risk other people caring in the same way it would be considered unprofessional by some corporate types to have anything other than firstnamelastname@whatever as your address
ShowThey should have chosen a better name.
Yeah, words like Google were once silly too, but things like Floorp browser are absolutely affected by their name as far as adoption and perception.
Alright then, you do you... I just spell it out real quick, takes about 5 seconds, and if they laugh it's a great icebreaker to take another 5 seconds to plant a little seed in their head about taking back control of our digital lives. Some people are really receptive to this.
Get your own domain 😃 im assuming tutanota has the possibility to use your own
I do have one I use for other purposes, but if someone's goal is to be as private as possible, a domain with all your information attached seems to go against that, no? Since registrar can be compelled for your information?
Just depends on your goals, I guess. My name is too common to use anything sensible either way.
It depends, I mean my domains are behind a lot of obfuscations and stuff but. Main thing is however security and email privacy not anonymity. For that I use other solutions. Email should be avoided as much as possible all together if anonymity is the goal. Email for me when I want people to know who I am. Also nice to use yourstupidnewsletter@mydomain.ml and if there is an issue just block that one. And I know where the leak is if I get spam.
That's why firstname@lastname.(com|org|net) stays winning
Just curious, do you worry that wearing a mask in public to protect yourself might be construed as unprofessional to these same "corporate types?"
If I'm being uncharitable, I don't think you're curious at all and are drawing a false equivalency between two completely different things to make what I said about a poorly picked software name seem more egregious and like my primary concern in all parts of life is how others perceive me over what is best for myself and others.
If I'm being charitable and/or misinterpreting, perhaps you mean that nobody should care what those people think in any circumstance because giving into their negative perceptions sometimes means giving into harmful behavior such as not masking or using more private/secure software due to its poorly picked name.
If Tuta was the only other company in the world, I'd settle for them no problem. And while I do mask in public, that doesn't mean that people staring at me isn't uncomfortable and anxiety inducing.
I think you understood the point I'm getting at, which, to your credit, you delivered more eloquently in your second paragraph than I've managed to do so in any of my comments in this thread.
Right on. Sorry for jumping the gun. Had too many instances on Lemmy of people inferring things I didn't mean.
I'm not going to be giving people an email address that ends in Tuta or Tutamail, especially verbally.
Are you Filipino? If so, I get it. Otherwise I don't see the issue. Personally, I use startmail with a custom domain.
Am I misremembering or did they hand over data to law enforcement years ago?
They handed over the recovery email of a French protestor, which iirc was a Gmail account, because the recovery email isn't encrypted. This allowed law enforcement to link the two and get access to the recovery email for what they needed. So they never handed over payment info or actual emails or anything and they had to be compelled to do it.
As a service, I think they're actually pretty good for stuff like this. But as a company they have wack priorities and politics.
It was an Apple ID I think.
I believe Proton also warn users that their recovery email can be subpoenaed
The IP address of a protonmail user was subpoenaed by the French government. They shouldn't have been logging it, but you can't just ignore a subpoena or a warrant. They didn't really have a choice in the matter.
Edited OP, but Andy replied on stormfront after tons of comments flooding their sub asking about best providers to switch to.
reading that gave me a vibe. "We tried to work with the Dems but they didn't go against the corporations, surely working with the Reps will go differently!"

Team sports thinking in full effect in this thread.
Yes, republican bad, yes, democrats bad. I don't give a fuck.
Avoiding some capricious big man prez interference via the DOJ by kissing the ring is sensible given Proton's vulnerability for being targeted as an easy chud treat, owing to their charity work.
Proton is a Swiss company, the sensible thing to do is not comment on American politics at all.
Fucks sake. I'm getting really tired of having to switch VPN provider every couple years.
