It’s because all those words have the same root:

        • Either from the Proto-West Germanic "burg", which means fortification/fortified town (maybe goes even back further to the Proto-Germanic "burgz")

        • or possibly the Ancient-Greek word "pýrgos", which was a tower fort

        • or maybe something else. Proto-Celtic or if we go way back: the Proto-Indo-European bʰergʰ- "to protect"

There’s a lot of speculation involved to where exactly the roots are, but in the end it all means a small castle or fortified town in which the "burger" lived. doggirl-smart

how did we get stuck at this ridiculous word? why are we using the raw uncooked french word? what's wrong with "burghers"? or anything, really.

Its a remnant when french was the prestige language of european academia and higher thought. Burghery also sounds strange.

i can make it to 'borg' until i have to think really hard and then google the answer. the rest is some sort of vowel diarrhea that defies any attempt to recall it correctly

I pronounced "bourgeois" as "burg-oize" like it was a French burger or something for a long ass time.
