Donald Trump has said he will “most likely” give the Chinese-owned TikTok app a 90-day reprieve from a potential ban in the US after he takes office on Monday morning.
The incoming president said on Saturday, in an interview with NBC News, that he was considering the extension on a Sunday deadline laid down for the parent company of the wildly popular app to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese-buyer or face a ban under US law.
“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation,” Trump said in the phone interview.
“If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday,” he said.
They don't want TikTok to withdraw from the US market. They want them to sell.
It would be hilarious if Tiktok just voluntarily shut down anyway on schedule.
They more or less have. I don't think they plan to resume services until they are given some sort of guarantee. If they are left in limbo for 90 days they will likely just be down for the entire time until they are told this law is repealed or something.
In the meantime all those western investors can eat shit.
Republicans are ending the wars across the world. Giving people back their entertainment. And (allegedly) going to lower the prices on consumer goods (it won't happen, obviously). What have the fucking democrats done for the working class outside of giving them the finger? Such a historical L on their part.
They have, sure, but like you expect the bare minimum from dems and not only did they not deliver, they were self-righteous pricks about it and scolded the working class instead. That's what pisses me off the most and Biden did fucking nothing during his time in office expect pour more gasoline on the fires globally.
This 90 days will become indefinite. It's probably not a coincidence that the ban was set to go in effect the day before Trump begins his term.
Uh yeah, duh. Their internal polling of 50-75 year old career politicians shows that TikTok is incredibly unpopular.
Either that, or they wanted him to be stuck with the policy that would likely be quite unpopular.
He gives Tiktok a 90 day extension, and Tiktok even mentions him on the app, clearly giving him credit for the act "Ah, well nevertheless..."
Gotta create enough confusion among the young that they won't immediately resist.
I was thinking this would be an easy PR win for Trump to unban it, but now I'm not as sure. He probably has too many oligarchs in his ear that are dying to own a piece of tiktok or its market share that they would encourage him to ban it (assuming tiktok would not let themselves be owned by an American company).
