God, my family loves to pull this shit. They claim their beliefs are obviously and objectively true, but as soon as you give the slightest pushback suddenly it’s all just their personal opinions and everyone’s opinions are equally valid and implying otherwise is meanspirited and hurtful and I need to apologize for being disrespectful.

And then 10 minutes later and they’re back on their bullshit.

Evidence > Reason > Opinion. Usually people with dog shit ideas have missed a step in the chain, if not all of them. If they give an opinion, ask their reasoning. If they give a reason, ask their evidence. Then dissect it by shifting it to a point they've never considered. Don't let them argue 'on script' by disagreeing with them.

Oh, I’ve tried that, believe me. They just say things like “I just feel it’s true” and try and change the subject immediately. Then they get mad at me for making them uncomfortable by asking them to explain their own beliefs. They’ve literally sat down and lectured me that the fact that I got a college education and learned how to critically evaluate ideas means that it’s inherently disrespectful and elitist for me to question why they believe what they do.
