But this ins't being anti-imperialist, its just taking sides in a struggle between two imperial power. Its like saying that Japan was doing anti-imperialism when it took over the US occupied Philipines. And since both powers are terrible, I'll take the side of the band of leftists one of the powers is supporting over that of a capitalist dictator that the other is.

Except that's not at all the same. Russia has economic and military influence over neighboring states but they're not in a hyperexploitive relationship with any of them. Just like in the USSR, it's not a bunch of money and resources flowing into Russia but rather Russia basically subsidizing the economies of it's "client states". I do think the Russian Bourgeoisie has Imperial aspirations but they're currently boxed out of the "core" category of the Imperialist global economic system. Imperial Japan, which existed in a multipolar world, literally just pillaged their colonies and exploited them for their own financial benefit. It's nothing like the same thing.

As for Rojava, you like them because they purport to be socialists but they have essentially accomplished the following: balkanizing Syria to weaken it's geopolitical position, confiscated all of Syrias oil and promptly handed over control to the US, and last but not least created a friendly territory for US military bases to solidify their force projection capabilities in the region. I'm sorry but that is serving Imperialism and inviting decades of misery to the region.

Marxists tend to see Imperialism as a structure that exists in material reality vs a concept that can be used to describe certain actions by a given power. A good analogy is how leftists define Racism vs how right wingers define Racism. Imperialism is a force and Russia is against it, whether their intentions are pure or not. Syria invited Russia, and they will leave if Syria wants them to. The US defacto controls Rojava now, they're not going to leave willingly.
