So, from what I’ve been told, while this kind of anime is popular in Japan, the people into are usually viewed somewhat negatively in mainstream Japanese society. Anime and manga are popular but a lot of the more popular stuff over there is fairly normie crap. Being loud and proud about enjoying this kind of stuff, particularly in rural Japan, will probably get you side eyed.
