There is a clip going around from 91 of Bernie telling congress to reduce the defense budget. He goes pretty hard core against both parties. So maybe he wasn't so agreeable, but he didn't draw that much attention so I guess that's the important factor. He wasn't threatening.
Vermont republicans and democrats alike have loved Bernie all along. I think the D label often hurts progressives amongst voters who just see that as toxic.

He didn't really, they fought him every step of the way. He basically spent every ounce of goodwill he earned over his years in the Senate to run.
