Keir Starmer has decided not to readmit his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn as a Labour MP, arguing that he has undermined efforts to restore the party’s reputation in the Jewish community.

An NEC disciplinary panel lifted the suspension of Corbyn’s party membership on Monday. That decision was made after he issued a conciliatory statement “clarifying” controversial remarks he made when the damning Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) report was published.

But in a strongly-worded statement on Wednesday, Starmer said he would not be welcoming Corbyn back into the Parliamentary Labour party (PLP).

“Jeremy Corbyn’s actions in response to the EHRC report undermined and set back our work in restoring trust and confidence in the Labour party’s ability to tackle antisemitism.

“In those circumstances, I have taken the decision not to restore the whip to Jeremy Corbyn. I will keep this situation under review,” he said.

Corbyn’s supporters had insisted party rules meant he should be automatically readmitted, and the decision is likely to reignite the simmering civil war between Starmer and Labour leftwingers.

Starmer appeared to repudiate the NEC’s decision, which was made under disciplinary rules now being reviewed as part of the response to the EHRC report.

“The disciplinary process does not have the confidence of the Jewish community. That became clear once again yesterday.

“It is the task of my leadership to fix what I have inherited. That is what I am resolute in doing and I have asked for an independent process to be established as soon as possible,” he said.

Rachel Riley and that rabbi that called Corbyn an antisemite for giving A Christmas Carol to Boris in a debate.

Just like the EHRC is independent despite being loaded with Tories, establishment figures, and with recent additions of 'privilege is a lie' reverse-racism proponents.

This whole thing has been truly Kafkaesque.

And the thing that Corbyn was criticised for by the EHCR report was the leadership meddling in the process and trying to make it work better (and we know from the leaks that the thing sabotaging it was the blairites dragging their feet on purpose to leak stuff to the press). Curious that when it is Starmer doing it that doesn't seem to be an issue though, but it is something good instead. Almost like it is just an excuse.

Just bring your own whip and beat the shit out of them? I don't see the issue here.

An article in the report literally states it's okay to comment on the scale of anti-semitism in the party

Yeah, but they don't care about the report. They never really did. It was just a cudgel that could say whatever they wanted it to while it was secret and now that it's been released and used as a pretext for vengeance (unsubstantiated by said report) they can safely ignore it's finding and recommendations in order to further purge the left.

Just a question from an American. What ARE the concrete examples of anti semitism?

from what i could tell, some mps said Palestine has a right to exist, and a few of the more daring ones said Israel did bad things occasionally

I mean, figures. It seems like something people keep mentioning without dividing deep into it. Aka, totally manufactured. I just thought there would be more uh, weight to the claim?

      • Being too socialist
      • Criticising Israel
      • Being at the same event as someone who once said something nice about Palestinians
      • Not loving bankers enough

There aren't any examples of Corbyn being antisemetic. The closest they got is he once liked and commented on a facebook picture of an anticapitalist mural.

Said mural had an apparently antisemetic caracature on it. Obviously not visible at all unless you saw it in person.

Basically this hinges on the fact that if you support Palestinian people, the media will go thru your history with a fine toothed comb and basically accuse you of being an antisemite because some antisemites criticise Israel.

Not having "the whip" means that he is effectively expelled from the party, but keeps his seat, and must sit as an independent until the whip is restored (never going to happen under starmer)

yeah, though i don't fancy his chances tbh, the anti-semite smear was extremely effective and the media will make sure it sticks to him wherever he goes
